Adhesive Stencil

Laser-cut adhesive stencils for adhesive printing

Adhesive stencils are mainly used when SMD components have to be soldered overhead using a solder wave. The adhesive dots are placed in a printing process using a laser-cut SMD stencil and then assembled or soldered. Metal stencils with a material thickness of 200-400 µm are preferred for this purpose. The diameter, height, and number of adhesive dots depend on the component geometry, which is created from the assembly data or from in-house component libraries. The adhesive stencil replaces the time-consuming and cost-intensive dispensing process.

Advantages

Advantages of laser-cut adhesive stencils

  • High precision in the placement and volume definition of adhesive dots
  • Reproducible and uniform adhesive deposits, which increases process reliability and the quality of assemblies
  • Suitable for automated assembly and high volumes
  • Faster and more cost-effective than dispensing methods

Area of application and function

Area of application and function

Adhesive stencils are primarily used in the SMD sector when components are processed using wave soldering and need to be fixed in place before the soldering process.

They replace the dispensing process and enable faster, more precise, and more economical application of adhesive dots to the circuit board.

Material and execution

Material and execution

  • Standard material stainless steel (e.g., 1.4301).
  • Typical material thicknesses for adhesive stencils are between 200 µm and 400 µm
  • Stencils can be supplied as plain film, for quick-release systems, or as fully assembled stencils in screen printing frames

Manufacturing process

Manufacturing process

  • our stencils are manufactured using modern laser cutting processes (e.g., Nd:YAG laser), which guarantees high precision and repeat accuracy.
  • our sheets have a tolerance of ± 2% of the material thickness
  • after laser cutting, our stencils are brushed to remove any cutting burrs

Data requirements and individualization

Data requirements and individualization

  • The geometry of adhesive dots depends on the size and shape of the components and is provided either from assembly data, in-house libraries, or directly by the customer.
  • Accepted data formats include Gerber, Extended Gerber, Barco-DPF, DXF, and ODB++.
  • Alternatively, the manufacturer can generate the adhesive data based on coordinates, housing shapes, and component orientations

FAQ: Frequently asked questions

For technical reasons, if not all components can be soldered using the solder wave, a combination of paste and adhesive stencils can be used to perform a “wet-on-wet” printing process. Here, the connection surfaces for the reflow process are first printed with solder paste using a laser-cut SMD stencil, afterwards, the adhesive dots are printed with a second stencil from the adhesive stencil for the wave soldering process. To prevent the adhesive stencil from damaging the solder paste deposits printed first, a recess is created on the underside of the adhesive stencil to match the height and shape of the solder paste deposits, and it is sealed with a customized cover. The size, height, and shape of the cover are always individually adapted to the layout of the printed circuit board.

Using an adhesive template, precise adhesive dot heights can be achieved in a printing process. This saves the cost of purchasing a dispenser. It is a cost-effective alternative to the dispensing process. The height of the adhesive dots is determined by the thickness of the template.
